Contains valuable information for the person wishing a fresh impetus in prayer work. An Ideal gift for your spiritual minded friends, and inspiring study for your times of meditation.
This book is a collection of prayers that were given by the Reverend Flower A. Newhouse in the Church of the Holy Quest. Taken from transcriptions of recorded Sunday services, these prayers were spontaneous expressions from the heart. . .
Prayers of A Mystic is dedicated to the
spiritual
student who is new to the stream of consciousness
necessary for prayer, and feels somewhat foreign
to it. Most people appreciate prayers as being
beautiful and uplifting, yet not as many have
incorporated this discipline into daily life. Of
course, this collection of prayers can serve many
purposes, and I hope that spiritual students of
every development will find enrichment in it.
Above all it is hoped that this book will be both
practical and inspirational, aiding the student
to break the barrier that has kept him from
successfully communing with God.
These prayers cover a scope of width and depth rarely encountered. They show innumerable ways to clothe man's needs and praises. No two prayers that one utters should be the same after one has realized freedom from the mind and felt the Divinity of the real self.
The first chapter consists of passages by Rev. Flower Newhouse about prayers and the techniques of praying; it is intended to inspire the reader to commune with God more often during the day and with increasing awareness, and to offer help to those who feel awkward in approaching God. The second chapterthe main body of this workconsists of the prayers. It may be important to stress that Rev. Newhouse urges spiritual students to speak their own prayers from their hearts, and not to recite memorized phrases during their prayer times. In that light, these prayers are to be studied and enjoyed as examples, rather than to be memorized.
May your prayer life be blessed, and may others be blessed because of your improved prayer work.
Pamela Boult
Consider prayer to be your most blessed time of holy communication with the Eternal Presence; want to pray. Be interested in others and be vitally concerned about their victories over their weaknesses. When you pray, be creative; think new thoughts. Pray with your whole interest in sharp focus. Confront God, and speak only to God. Never let your mind wander; you will not get good prayer forms until your prayerful consciousness remains focused on God. If your focus is good, it will hold for a brief period. Above all, give thanks when you pray, and pray without ceasing. (pg. 9)
There is a presence in us that upholds us. This is as comforting as a mother, as strengthening as a father, as beautiful as spring, and as steadfast as the silent stars. (pg. 9)

The life and writings of Flower A. Newhouse are those of a Christian mystic, and her insights into the inner realms of life provide us with a path to wholeness that she called "Living the Life." These teachings are not doctrine, but a practical guide to the direct, immediate experience of God. Flower's mission was also to reawaken humanity to the reality of angels, a work she began with her first book in 1937, and added to in many published writings and in recorded lectures.
Dr. Stephen Isaac was a teacher, counselor, and consultant in various public schools, universities, and private industries. Dr. Isaac maintained a life-long interest in Questhaven Retreat, and Flower A. Newhouse, whom he met when he was ten years old. Ordained a minister in this work in 1952, he served as a regular speaker and as its director.
Phyllis Isaac resides on the grounds at Questhaven and has known Flower A. Newhouse since she was a child. She has been a life long student of her work and serves the Retreat as a minister, speaker, workshop coordinator, editor, and counselor.
